Deployment is always a stressful time for everyone involved. This blog entry will cover a few things to take care of before deployment. The less confusion there is during a deployment, the less stressful it will be on both the service member and the significant other involved. Please note this list does not cover everything, it is a general overview of most major things. Feel free to add to the list with anything I have left out.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Do you know where the fuse box is?
  • Do you know where the nearest mechanic is?
  • Do you know who to call in case household repairs need to be done?
  • Do you know who your PCM is?
  • Do you know where the nearest Emergency Room is?
  • Do you know where all of his important documents (birth certificate, ss card, etc) are? Please note I’ve always found it helpful to have these items locked in a fireproof lockbox in the home somewhere.

Things that should be taken care of before deployment

  • Any major repairs. It’s always a good idea to make sure your vehicle(s) are in good condition. Taking care of oil changes, tires, replacing belts before a deployment will make it easier for both parties. The service member won’t have to be as worried something can go wrong and the significant other can also be at ease.
  • Make sure IDs/Base Decals/Car Registration/Accounts/SGLI/etc. is up to date
  • Gather any relevant paperwork and important documents. Start a deployment file.

Things to discuss

  • How household finances should be handled (will they be handled automatically? Do you know the password and log in information for online accounts?)
  • OPSEC
  • Communication. Will his job prevent him from being in contact with you often?

Paperwork:

  • Power Of Attorney
  • Will
  • Copy of Page 2
  • SGLI information
  • Contact information to FRG and Ombudsman
  • Mailing information
  • Red Cross Contact information
  • Separate copies of Credit Cards/Debit cards with contact information
