Now that we have covered the basics of Post Marriage
Paperwork and TRICARE, let’s move along to cover the support. This installment
of New Navy Wife Kit will cover the FRG and the Ombudsman, as well as how to
contact them.
What is an Ombudsman?
The Ombudsman is a volunteer spouse (of a Sailor within the
Command) who is appointed by the Commanding Officer and who serves as a
connection between the families and the Command. This is the person to speak to
if you need information regarding anything officially command related, however,
they can help you with any unofficial questions as well. This includes (but is
not limited to) the following:
- Contact info for the ship
- Help with abuse
- Directing you to the proper services you might need
How Do I Contact My Ombudsman?
When looking to contact your Ombudsman, you have several
options:
- You Sailor can pass your contact information along for
you.
- Sometimes the official ship/boat website will have the
contact information for your Ombudsman on it.
- Contact your local Fleet and Family Support Center.
What Is The FRG?
The FRG is short for Family Readiness Group. The FRG
primarily plans and conducts social and informational meetings. They also plan
and implement morale building activities. This group is comprised of volunteers
and generally meets during deployment, though many will meet at other times.
How Do I Contact The FRG?
To contact the FRG you should either ask your Sailor or your
Ombudsman to get the contact information of the FRG President and/or the FRG
Meeting times and locations.
Both the Ombudsman and the FRG are very useful sources of
information and sanity. Be sure to keep your Ombudsman in the loop should any
emergency situations arise. More information regarding the Ombudsman can be
found at the Navy Fleet and Family Support Site (https://www.nffsp.org/). Stay tuned for the
next installment of New Navy Wife Kit that will cover Navy Pay. Last update : 08/04/2009 03:46 PM
